Water-Cooled

An alternative to the self-contained air-cooled Wine Guardian is our self-contained water-cooled system. Water-cooled systems are ideal for most high-rise apartment complex applications where chiller or cooling towers are commonly part of the building’s mechanical system. Other potential applications include restaurants or country clubs that have the ability to tie the system into the dishwashing system.

The water-cooled Wine Guardian is physically the same size as our standard air-cooled model but requires no airflow across its condenser. The unit uses water instead of air to cool its condenser, therefore no outside venting or cool air is required for operation. The system only uses water when there is a call for cooling. When the temperature in the wine cellar is satisfied, the compressor and water shut off. The water-cooled Wine Guardian requires: two water connections (one in, one out); primary power; drain; and, wine room side ductwork connections.

Low Ambient

Low ambient protection is required when the air across the Wine Guardian condenser will be below 40° F. Remember, this refers not only the temperature where the Wine Guardian unit is located, but also the conditions of the outdoors air should you need to duct air into the condenser from outside of the residence or building. Many areas across the country have sustained temperatures below 40° F during winter months and adding this option will protect the compressor from temperatures that are too cold for its proper operation.

The two main components of Wine Guardian’s low ambient protection option are a "crankcase heater," which is a heater located underneath the compressor to keep its oil warm, and a "fan cycling switch." The fan cycling switch turns the condenser fan on and off as needed to keep the refrigerant pressures within preset levels. (When the condenser coil is subjected to cold air it doesn't always need air flow across itself to provide sufficient cooling of the refrigerant. The fan cycling switch provides this airflow control.) The low ambient protection option must be installed at our factory and must be specified at time of order.

High Ambient

Wine Guardian also offers a high ambient option specifically designed and manufactured for applications where the Wine Guardian unit will be exposed to extremely warm air, such as attic spaces, crawl spaces or covered outdoor applications. High Ambient models should also be considered when outdoor air is required to be ducted to the condenser section and the temperature will be above 95° F during parts of the year.

High ambient units must not be exposed to temperatures above 125° F – 30 degrees higher than standard Wine Guardian systems, which have a maximum temperature of 95° F. The high ambient option includes special coils, special condenser fan and refrigeration controls. 1/4-ton and 1/2-ton units are currently available while 1-ton and 2-ton models will be available winter 2009.

Heating Coil

The Wine Guardian heater option is required when the temperature in the rooms surrounding the wine cellar have the possibility of dropping below 50° F for an extended period of time. The construction of the wine cellar and the insulation values of the walls and ceilings will determine how long it will take for the wine cellar temperature to fall below set point.

The Wine Guardian heater option acts to warm the air entering the wine cellar in order to maintain a constant set point. The 1/4-ton and 1/2-ton units incorporate a 1-kilowatt heater; the 1-ton and 2-ton units include a 2-kilowatt heater. The heater has the ability to heat the air from five to 12 degrees depending upon the Wine Guardian unit's size.

The heater option includes an integral electric heating element, thermal overload protection device and controls – including a standard Honeywell thermostat. The Wine Guardian will either cool or heat the air, but it is not designed to do both at the same time. The Wine Guardian heater option must be installed at our factory and must be specified at time of order.

Humidification

Wine Guardian optional humidifiers can be ordered either as free-standing or integrated units, to best suit application needs/preferences. Both models are easy to install and operate. They add moisture to the cellar as required and sensed by the Wine Guardian’s humidistat.

The free-standing version can be used with any wine cellar air conditioning system, while the integrated version must be mounted to a Wine Guardian system.
